Description:

China, Ming/ early Qing dynasty
40 x 16 x 2,5 cm
With flat rounded sides, the interior carved with low relief knob scrolls, comprising an inner group of four registers with opposing knob scrolls surrounded by an outward facing register with knob scrolls under a rounded smooth rim, the exterior with a dense classical scroll design, the base painted black.

A slightly larger vermilion lacquer Tixi tray from the first half of the 17th century was sold at Christie's, New York, on 12/9/2019 as lot 917. It is of a squarer format than the present tray, but has a similar profile and design with opposing and outward facing knob scrolls on the interior and a classical scroll on the exterior. A similar tray in black and vermilion lacquer, but with a different arrangement of knob rollers, see Bonhams, New York, 16.3.2015, lot 8066, where it is compared to another tray included in 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1993, no. 30 - Minor damages and restorations to the corners and edges in places, very small losses
